Cary has harsh opening to start of Summer League play
June 16, 2009 By David Maney II of Cary High School
Good news - its the first game of the summer league schedule; Bad news - it was a loss against cross town rivals the Cougars from Apex High School.
That is the good and bad of things for the Imps Varsity baseball team from Cary High School as they opened up the 2009 Central Carolina Summer Scholastic Baseball League Monday night.
Cary, missing some players, was already at a uphill challenge having to face their cross town rivals, and the challenge became even greater as the Cougars plated their first three batters and ended up defeating CHS in five-innings, 10-0.
After the Imps went down quietly in the top of the first, with Sophomore Tony Sanchez getting the only hit in the first, Apex went to work quickly.
Following a walk to Sean Buchanan, Nick Smith singled, off starting Pitcher Jeremy Harris, to right putting two runners on with no outs. Christian Rholl reached after being hit by a pitch.
Buchanan scored on a past ball then Smith scored off a single by Kyle Tighe. The final run of the inning came on a past ball allowing Rholl to score.
After that, Harry Vourhees (fly-out), Ben Scerri (ground-out), and Austin Winstead (fly-out), was put down in order by Harris.
In the top of the second inning, Joey Bone reached on a walk for Cary, but was unable to score as Addison Scrivani (ground-out), Matt Drew (ground-out), and Tanner Stanfield (strike-out) closed out the side.
Bo McMillian started the bottom of the second for AHS with a walk then stole second. Harris calmed down and got the next two hitters out. Dylan Edwards grounded-out to first, then Buchanan struck-out putting two outs on the board with a runner at third.
Smith brought in McMillian from third with a single to left, but was put out at second when Rholl grounded out to short as Anthony Shelton made a short toss over to Scrivani at second for the third out of the inning.
Apex put another run on the board in the third as Tighe opened the bottom of the inning with a single and scored on a sacrifice fly from Scerri to make it 5-0, Cougars.
Cary made a switch on the mound in the fourth, as they moved Bone over from first to pitch and he held the Cougars scoreless. Following a single by Buchanan, Bone retired the side getting Smith to fly-out to right, Rholl to ground out to second and struck-out Tighe for the final out.
Apex made the same move CHS did an inning before as they switched up Pitchers, bringing in Winstead from left to take over pitching duties.
Cary threatened with two outs on the board in the top of the fifth.
After Alex Salisbury grounded-out and Ben Coleman struck-out, Ben Kermer reached on a walk. Kyle Newnam singled up the middle to put two runners on then was followed by Shelton who singled to left.
Unfortunately for Cary they weren't able to bring any across as Sanchez grounded-out to second to end the inning.
Matt Serenscics to ground-out to short, off CHS Pitcher Bone, to start the bottom of the fifth, but that is when the Cougars exploded for five runs starting with a solo home-run by Jordan McClead.
Bone walked Winstead, then grazed Jeb Struder with a pitch putting runners on first and second with one out. Edwards singled to left loading the bases for Buchanan who singled to left again scoring both Winstead and Struder making it 8-0, AHS.
Smith closed out the game tripling to right, bringing in Edwards and Buchanan for the final two runs needed, 10-0, to call the game after five innings of play.
Cary will have their home opener on Thursday night as they take on Broughton in a Junior Varsity/Varsity Double Header. JV will play at 5 followed by Varsity shortly there after as close to 7 as possible.
Home games will be played on Imps field on the campus of Cary High School.
