Home » Football NewsImps run away from CapitalsJune 5, 2008 By David Maney II of Cary High SchoolWritten by David Maney II CHS Sports Information Director They say speed kills. The Broughton Capitals found that out first hand Friday night. Senior Running back Denny Feracho and Junior Running back Andrew Hill were the guilty combo that proved that theory. The two combined for two scores apiece while amassing 232 yards, out of Cary's total 399 yards, on the ground in only 18 carries as Cary shut-out their hosts by the score of 28-0. CHS's defense definitely had a large factor in this out come as they held the Capitals to 273 total yards (128 rushing, 145 passing) for the game. The Imps won the opening coin toss but defered to the second half, kicking off to BHS. Emery Young received the Brandon Lehmon kick-off on his own 6 and set up the Capitals with excellent starting position on their own 23 after a 17 yard return. Young was definitely their go-to-guy as he was responsible for the first 9 carries of the game for BHS. Young finished the game with 130 yards on the ground on 30 carries. Those 9 carries covered 47 yards and yield 3 first downs and moved the ball into Cary territory at the 32 yard line. Mike Bauza got the call on the next two plays as he rushed ahead for 8 yards setting up third-and-2 for Broughton. That's when the Cary defense proved they were going to have no part of the Capitals getting the first score of the game as Lehman came charging in from his line backer position to sack Chand Browning for a 8-yard loss back to the 30 setting up fourth and 10. It was Lehman again, along with Sophomore Freshad Hunter who stopped Browing 5 yards short of the first down turning the ball over to the Imps on their own 30. After a quick three-and-out by CHS, the defense got the ball back with the first positive turn-over of the season. On second-and-9, Browning fumbled on the BHS 39, and Senior Ethan Pond came up with the recovery on the 34. After getting the ball back, it took the Imps only 4 plays to put up their first points for the year. On first-and-ten, Senior Quarterback Kendall Smith, (5-12-1, 111 yards), connected with Wide-out David Whelan for a 16-yard gain for the BHS 18. After no gain on first down, Smith kept it himself and rambled 17 yards to the BHS 1 and another first down. From there Feracho, (10 carries, 151 yards, 2 TD), punched it in for his first of two scores on the night. Lehman hit the PAT making it 7-0, CHS, with under a minute left in the first quarter. That's the way they would go into the locker room at the break, with Cary up 7-0. CHS was the first to get the ball in the second half and used their possession well as they put another scoring drive together this one covering 83 yards in 5 plays taking 1:25 off the clock. After an incomplete pass on first down, an no gain on second, Smith connected with Senior Wide-out Morgan Harris, (2 catches for 69 yards), with a great sideline connection for 33 yards to mid-field and another first down. From there the Mohammad Ali-Joe Frazier combination, as Head Coach Ben Kolstad referenced it as, went to work. Feracho got the call on first down rambling 24 yards to the BHS 26, then Hill, (8 carries, 81 yards, 2 TD), finished the drive off covering the final 26 for the touchdown and his first score of the night. Lehman was good with the kick making it 14-0, CHS. All was quiet until with just over 3 minutes left in the third. That was when it took Cary only 2 plays to cover 88 yards. Smith opened the two play drive, starting at the CHS 12, by hitting Senior Wide-out Cameron Castor for a 16-yard pass play to the CHS 28 and another first down. From there Feracho took care of the rest, as he broke a couple tackles, then ran up the middle of the field 72 yards for the score putting Cary up by three touchdowns. Lehman converted on the extra-point attempt making it 21-0, CHS, with 2:26 left in the third. The Imps final score of the game came at the start of the final quarter. The drive actually started with a second left in the third quarter where on first down Feracho broke loose for a 33-yard ramble into Capitals territory to the BHS 41. The rest of the drive stayed on the ground as on first down, Hill had a two-yard run. Smith got another first down with a 19-yard run on 2nd-and-8 from the BHS39. Feracho got another first down to the BHS 6, with his 14-yard scurry. Following another 3-yard run by Feracho, Hill closed out the drive with his 3-yard run for the score. Lehman hit the point-after-attempt making it 28-0, CHS, with 10:07 left in the game. That would be the way the game would end as the Imps will head into their home opener next friday night against Leesville Road with a 1-0 mark. The Pride will also be coming into the game with a 1-0 mark after their 45-7 win over Panther Creek. » Be the first to leave a comment
