Varsity football looked IMPressive at Jamboree
June 5, 2008 By David Maney II of Cary High School
Written by David Maney II CHS Sports Information Director
The coaches of any Varsity Football team usually us the same pattern ever year as they start things off slowly at the beginning of every new season.
First, conditioning, then drills, then comes the pads.
It's all well in good to watch your players during practice making sure they execute plays and perform their duties correctly during repeated run throughs.
But its the scrimmages where the coaches will get the necessary knowledge to fine tune their team for the first real test of the season, not to mention the players getting a chance to hit somebody besides their team mates.
After a wait in the 100 degree heat, and an hour delay for a storm front to pass through, Cary got their chance to hit somebody.
Hit they did, as well as score, as Cary opened the new 2007 football pre-season off with a bang, or should say solid pop, of pad on pad action at the 2007 Wolverine Jamboree.
Cary opened the scrimmage against Greater Neuse 4A Conference member Knightdale, then followed with Cap-7 4A member Wakefield, Pac-7 4A member Chapel Hill and finished off with Nash Central, members of the New 6 3A conference.
Cary looks very well to hold their own this season, both on offense and defense, but like every coach I have every talked too, Coach Ben Kolstad would say their is definitely more work to be done.
While the number of players will be lower than in past years, Cary will definitely be taller and bigger then in past years. Which lends to the saying, its not how many, but who you have playing the positions.
The Imps open their season on the road next Friday night as they take a short trip to downtown Raleigh to take on the Capitals from Needham B. Broughton High School.
CHS came away with a 29-20 win last year as rains drenched the middle portions of the endowment game match-up. The Imps look for a repeat performance as they wish to open their 2007 home schedule with a 1-0 record.
Photos from the Wolverine Jamboree should be posted later on this afternoon or evening.
