Home » Football NewsCary grounds Green HopeOctober 17, 2008 By David Maney II of Cary High SchoolMorrisville - In the driving mist Friday night over at Green Hope High School, the Imps and the Falcons renewed their yearly cross-town rivalry. These two teams could be winless or undefeated and it still would not matter deciding the outcome of this Tri-8 conference match up. Cary came into the game with a record of 2-5, 2-1 in conference, while Green Hope came with a 0-3, 0-7 mark. The Falcons won the toss and took the ball, but went 3-and-out with their first possession. The Imps had better successes with their first possession netting in 3 points. Following a 4-yard gain by Ralph Chapman, Bryan Wilson broke through for a 7-yard gain to the GHHS 41 and a first down. Wilson, 6-yards, and Tommy Robinson, 9-yards, combined together for another first down to the GHHS 26. From there CHS took two steps back to take one big gain forward. After an incomplete pass, and a 2-yard loss, Daniel Steed scrambled for 6 yards to make it 4th and 6 at the GHHS 22. Wilson got the first down with a 10-yard run to the GHHS 12. Green Hope hit Robinson on first down and popped the ball out but Steed recovered the ball at the GHHS 17. Steed was sacked on second down for a 7-yard loss to the GHHS 24. Wilson got back 5 of those yards to the GHHS 19. That is where Will Gilfillan hit a 37-yard field goal to give the Imps the lead, 3-0, with 4:26 left in the first quarter. Following a blown punt by Green Hope (0-4, 0-8), Cary started their next drive at the GHHS 10. From there it took only 3 plays to put seven more on the scoreboard. After no gain on first down, Steed completed a 6-yard pass to Chapman to the GHHS 4, where Wilson ran up the middle for the final yards and the touchdown. Gilfillan split the uprights for the PAT giving CHS a 10-0 lead with 2:00 left in the first quarter. After back-to-back turnovers, interception by Green Hope and fumble recovery by Cary, CHS only needed three plays to put more points on the board. Following a 3-yard run by Wilson, Chapman ran twice more for 3-yards and 2-yards respectively, the final two for the score. Gilfillan's kick was good making it 17-0, with 6:57 left in the half. The Imps put seven more on the board with less than a minute remaining in the first half. Steed hit Wilson on a 11-yard pass completion on first down to the GHHS 28. After an incomplete pass, Wilson rambled for 18-yards to the GHHS 10. Following a time-out by Cary, Steed connected with Wilson for a 10-yard touchdown pass reception. Gilfillan's kick was good making it 24-0 at the half-time. After a scoreless third quarter, Cary (3-1, 3-5) posted the only score of the fourth quarter. This drive actually started at the end of the third quarter from the CHS 43. Following a 5-yard false start penalty on the Imps, Rakeem Chambers broke loose for a 14-yard gain to the GHHS 48 making it 2nd and 1. Chambers followed that up with another 25-yard gain to the GHHS 23 for a first down as the third quarters came to a close. Robinson opened the fourth quarter breaking several tackles rambling 23-yard for the final score of the game. Gilfillan's kick was no good leaving the final score at 30-0, CHS. Cary's next game will be at home Friday night against another cross-town rival. This time its against the Cougars from Apex High School (4-0, 6-2) and a battle for top positioning in the Tri-8 conference. Cougars defeated the Catamounts from Panther Creek, 34-7. » Be the first to leave a comment
