For three quarters, Cary Varsity Boy's basketball stayed with the Jaguars from Athens Drive.Then there was that one quarter that provided the difference needed to push ADHS, (16-2, 7-2), past CHS Tuesday night at Cary.
The Jaguars opened up a big thirteen point advantage, 22-9, after one quarter of play then held on for a 60-48 Tri-8 conference win against the Imps.
Just over two and half minutes into the contest, CHS was already looking down a nine point deficit after Kennan Mims and Josh Davis got ADHS off on the right foot.
Mims opened the scoring with a jumper then Davis, (19 points, 11 rebounds), followed with a Dunk off an assist from Mims. Greyson Eubanks followed hitting from beyond the arc making it 7-0, Jags then Mims hit two from the line at the 5:45 mark giving Athens a 9 point lead.
Senior Kevin Windley, (15 points, 10 rebounds), got the Imps, (2-16, 2-7), on the board at the 5:29 mark.
The Imps closed the gap to 6 points, after Sophomore Colton Lehman hit a three from the top of the arc making it 11-5, AD, with 3:30 left in the quarter.
Quentin Edmundson gave the Jags their largest lead of the quarter with a three with just over a minute left making it 20-7.
The Jags got their largest advantage of the game at the 5:22 mark of the second quarter after Eubanks hit from beyond the arc making it 27-11, AD.
Cary quitely starting chopping into the Athens lead. Senior Chris Jurgenson hit from long range just seconds later and then after an exchange of lay-ups, Windley scored on a lay-up after getting a rebound off his own jumper making it a 11-point seperation at 29-18, AD, with just over three minutes left in the half.
After Athens extended their lead back out to 15, CHS knotched the lead back down to 10-points, the lowest since early in the first quarter. Sophomore Austin Brannen hit a three with just under two minutes left cutting it down to 12 points then Senior Quan Harris converted a lay-up with :51 seconds left cutting the lead to 10 points, 35-25, which was how both teams headed into the locker rooms at the break.
Eubanks opened the third quarter hitting from three to extend the Athens lead back out to 13, 38-25. Senior Parker Stephenson answered with a short jumper for Cary just moments later. Following a jumper by Edmundson, Junior Lucas Edminsten converted on a lay-up off an assist by Windley making it 40-29, AD, with 5:15 left in the quarter.
Windley hit back to back shots just :26 seconds apart, hitting from long range at 4:47 off an assist by Harris, then from in close at 4:21 cutting the Athens lead to single digits at 42-34 with 4:21 remaining.
The Jaguars reclaimed a 15 point advantage after Mims hit from beyond the arc and Edmundson hit two from the line making it 51-36 with just under a minute left in the quarter.
CHS got the Athens lead to single digits twice in the final quarter, first coming with 3:43 left after Brannen hit two from the charity strip then with 3:09 remaining as Brannen scored from close in making it 46-55.
The Jagaurs were just to strong down the stretch as they left the Cary Gym with a 12-point victory, 60-48, helping them keep pace with Panther Creek and Middle Creek.
